·       Date & Location: On August 5, 2025, a massive flash flood struck Dharali village in Uttarkashi district. The flood was caused by sudden heavy rainfall and a cloudburst in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga River.

·       Nature of Disaster: Experts think that a mix of cloudburst and possibly a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) or a landslide may have caused the flooding.

·       Time: The powerful wave of water and debris hit around 1:30 PM local time.

📊 Damage and Casualties

  • Deaths: Initial reports confirmed 4 deaths. As rescue operations continued, the toll reportedly increased to more than 5.
  • Missing Persons: Over 50 to 100 people were reported missing. This includes at least 11 personnel from the Indian Army.

1.       Nearly 20 to 50 hotels, homestays, and 40 to 50 houses were completely swept away.

2.       Shops, roads, and part of an Army camp were also harmed.

🚑 Rescue & Relief Operations

  • Rapid Response: Rescue efforts involved the Indian Army (Ibex Brigade), NDRF, SDRF, and ITBP. All were deployed at a rapid pace.
  • Evacuations: Around 190 people were safely rescued with the help of Chinook, Mi-17, and HAL Dhruv helicopters, drones, sniffer dogs, and ground-penetrating radars.
  • Challenges: Landslides and blocked roads from debris and ongoing rain made rescue efforts very difficult.
